38 For I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither the present nor the future, nor any powers, 39 neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord.
These verses are part of Paul’s soaring conclusion to Romans 8, one of the most hope-filled chapters in Scripture. After assuring believers that God is for them and no charge can stick against them (Romans 8:31–34), Paul turns to emphasize a foundational truth: nothing can separate us from God’s love in Christ. In verse 38, he begins listing categories of things that might seem like they could break that bond—but cannot.
Do you ever wonder if you’ve gone too far, or if life’s chaos means God has walked away? Paul would look you in the eye and say, “I’m convinced otherwise.” He had faced beatings, shipwrecks, prison, and betrayal—and he was certain God’s love never left him. This verse is a weapon against fear. Not even death can break the bond. Not your worst day, your darkest hour, or the most powerful enemy you can imagine. God’s love for you in Christ is unshakable.
