17 It was you who set all the boundaries of the earth; you made both summer and winter.
Psalm 74 is a lament, written in a time when the temple had been destroyed and God’s people were in deep distress. In verses 12–17, the psalmist shifts from sorrow to recalling God’s power as Creator and King. By pointing to God’s authority over creation—the setting of earth’s boundaries and the ordering of seasons—the psalmist is reminding both himself and God’s people that the One who governs nature also governs history. If He can set the limits of oceans and bring forth summer and winter, He can set limits to their suffering and bring about restoration.
When everything feels chaotic, this verse points you back to the unshakable reality: God set the world’s boundaries and holds the seasons in place. Your life is not at the mercy of random events or human power—it’s under the same hand that tells the ocean where to stop and the sun when to rise. Just as summer always follows winter, God can bring warmth and light after seasons of cold and loss. Trust His timing. The One who governs the natural order will not fail to govern your story with the same precision and care.
