1 Answer me when I call to you, my righteous God. Give me relief from my distress; have mercy on me and hear my prayer.
David is crying out to God during a time of personal distress—likely when he was being pursued by enemies, possibly during Absalom’s rebellion. He acknowledges that God has helped him before and pleads for that same mercy again. This verse opens a psalm where David moves from personal prayer to wise counsel and finally, confident peace.
When you’re anxious or overwhelmed, you can approach God with honest words, just like David did. You don’t have to hide your fear or distress—God welcomes your raw, real cries. He is not only righteous in character but also rich in mercy. Your past experiences of His help are reminders that you can trust Him again today. Whether the pressure you’re under is from circumstances, people, or your own thoughts, take comfort in this: God hears you, and He will respond in His righteousness and mercy.
