1 Samuel 16:7 (NIV)

But the Lord said to Samuel, “Do not consider his appearance or his height, for I have rejected him. The Lord does not look at the things people look at. People look at the outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart.”

Context

Samuel was sent to anoint the next king of Israel from among Jesse’s sons. Though Eliab looked the part outwardly, God reminded Samuel that divine judgment is based on inner character, not physical appearance.

Theme

Inner worth over outward appearance.

Author

Traditionally attributed to the prophet Samuel (compiled with contributions from prophets like Nathan and Gad).

Key Word

“Heart” – symbolizes true character, motives, and inner life as seen by God.

Application

When you feel overlooked, unattractive, or judged by appearances, remember God sees your heart. Your true value isn’t in how you look but in who you are—what’s in your heart is what matters most to Him.
