Micah 7:8 (NIV)

Do not gloat over me, my enemy! Though I have fallen, I will rise. Though I sit in darkness, the Lord will be my light.

Context

Micah 7 is a prophetic lament from the prophet Micah over the state of the nation of Israel. The people have turned to sin, leaders have failed, and judgment has come. Yet amid this bleakness, Micah speaks on behalf of the faithful remnant, declaring hope in God’s restoration. Verse 8 is a bold declaration of resilient faith—spoken not from a place of strength, but from the ashes of defeat. Even in darkness, God’s light is sure.

Theme

Even when life knocks you down, God’s light lifts you up.

Author

Micah, a prophet to Judah in the 8th century BC, known for calling out injustice and pointing to both judgment and future restoration.

Key Word

“Though I have fallen” – Acknowledges failure or hardship, but refuses to stay down.

Application

Maybe today you feel surrounded—by failure, shame, fear, or even mockery from others. Maybe the darkness feels thick, and you’re tempted to believe it’s final. Micah 7:8 tells you otherwise: This isn’t the end. You may have fallen, but you will rise. You may feel surrounded by shadows, but the Lord is your light. He’s not waiting for you to climb out on your own—He comes to you with light, with grace, and with strength to rise again. Don’t let your enemy—or your inner critic—convince you that it’s over. In God’s story, darkness never has the final word.
